Ashley loves hair stories
Growing up in the countryside in St Ann, Jamaica, every Saturday we would wash our hair with spring water from the mountains nearby.
With our hair still wet, us kids would run around and play. Trying to catch each other with the green watering hose spraying all over our clothes.
Soaked through, we would dry ourselves off in the sun while having our hair oiled and platted up.
Sometimes friends would stop by and join us after their hair wash, and we would take it in turn to braid each other’s hair.
Afterwards we would shell peas picked from mum’s kitchen garden or dad’s farm, for Saturday soups and Sunday lunches.
And we would talk and talk and talk all our troubles out.
Then on Sundays, if we were heading to church to see friends, I would adorn my hair with colourful bobbles, ribbons, and clips.
Finished off with pretty dresses, white socks up to my knees and black brogues, an old pair reconditioned for me by Mr Shoey who lived over by Pedro River.
I loved those shoes and wore them to school and for best.
These are the memories that sprung to mind when I was thinking ahead on my catch-up with Ashley Broderick, last Monday gone. She is the founder of Nandi Nicole and is featured in Pitch Cool.
