Meet Wayne Carnegie, creator of Star Boy.
Wayne Carnegie is a Jamaican/Canadian Author, Illustrator, 3D Artist, and College Professor.
Born in Spanish Town, Wayne is the second eldest of six children.
In 1991, at 9 years old, Wayne was sent to live with his grandmother on her farm in Clarendon, near Saint Ann.
Initially, Wayne disliked rural life, with its hills, gravel roads, and frequent need to travel by foot, but over time he grew to love the slow pace of the countryside.
Wayne attended McNie All Age School, starting in Grade 1. He missed many classes due to his grandmother's frequent trips to Kingston for medical appointments. Despite these challenges, Wayne excelled academically and in track and field while developing a passion for the visual arts.
At 14, Wayne returned to Spanish Town and attended the renowned St. Jago High School, joining the track team but soon realised his true calling was in visual arts and academics.
After finishing high school in 2002, Wayne moved to Canada and enrolled in the 3D Animation programme at Toronto Film School, graduating in 2004.
Wayne spent the next 5 years working as a Graphic Designer, and Animation Teaching Assistant at Toronto Film School.
Wayne's career in the animation industry began in 2009 with his work on the animated television series Waybuloo. He specialised as a 3D Surfacing/Texture Artist and contributed to various animated features and TV series, including The Nut Job, Trollhunters, Super Giant Robot Brothers, and Barbie.
In 2021, Wayne began creating his own stories through children's books and short films with Jamaican/Caribbean themes. His short, animated film, Star Boy, follows a young British boy who travels to Jamaica for the first time, learning about himself and his heritage while making friends along the way.
Star Boy is a collaboration with Jamaican animation artists Deon Coke, Davan Easy, Toni-Ann Johnson, writer and storyboard artist Leisl Adams, and voice-over actors Lillian Allen, Neisha Campbell, and Kaneil Campbell.
Star Boy is being created for release in 2026.
