Karol Cybulski

JUNIOR COLOURIST AT CHEAT

Colouring is an essential, but often overlooked, part of the filmmaking process. Yet it’s a skill that requires niche detailing. “I’ve always seen grading as painting in reverse,” explains CHEAT’s Junior Colourist Karol Cybulski, referring to the attention she pays to the depth, shape and texture of a film, and the importance of deciding its overall colour palette.

Despite still being at the start of her career, she’s acquired eclectic experience across film and photography that gives her a well-rounded approach. For Cybulski, “colouring marries many of my interests; the narrative side of editing and the aesthetics of the imagery.” She also enjoys the balance between creativity and the technical skill required; it complements her logistical way of thinking, citing the process much like “completing an intricate puzzle.”
